Erotic werewolf novel that takes place on a fictional Carribean island colony in the 1840’s.
It is told in a third person limited point of view from multiple characters as the island deals with wolf attacks on its citizens that lead to fears of a werewolf lurking amoung them. The title character, Viviana Montenegro, is a strong-willed, intelligent young woman whose father is entrusted with overseeing the island’s cinnamon crop. Though beautiful and from a high-born family, she has trouble coming to terms with the expectations of a patriarchal society, encountering many suitors who are inevitably repelled by her dark nature. When her dearest friend Millicent Allcott, the daughter of the island’s governor, goes missing, Viviana is plagued by nightmares of ghastly images that make her believe she is the werewolf and connected to her friend’s disappearance. Her fears escalate when nocturnal attacks from a large wolf begin to plague the island, claiming both human and animal victims, and plunging the inhabitants into a state of ominous terror.
As the body count grows, the island’s constables hire a skilled British tracker to assist in finding the beast responsible. Enter Tristan Hawthorne, who eventually tracks the wolf prints from a site of one of the attacks to Viviana’s home. This leads to his meeting Viviana and the two engaging in a passionate affair. She confesses her fear of being responsible for the mounting deaths, but assures him, if she is indeed a lycanthrope, she is not aware of her nocturnal actions. Tristan believes in her moral character, and vows to help.
Unfortunately, the situation is made graver when the charismatic Minister Hale, a self-proclaimed holy man and werewolf hunter, arrives on the island. Claiming all werewolves are fallen women, he riles up an angry mob determined to find the changeling responsible for the mounting deaths and burn her at the stake. Viviana knows her time is short and that it is only a matter of time before the minister learns of the wolf tracks that lead to her home.
Can she discover the truth of the wolf attacks and their ties to the brutal history of the island before she is blamed and put to death?
“Tracks of Viviana” is a not just a tale of horror, romance and eroticism. It is a comment on how all societies, in any age, treat the most vulnerable among us. Though it takes place in the 19th century, there are many echoes of today’s world within its pages.
